I can't shake my concerns about the foods I'm eating and feeding my family.
Just recently I moved in with my in-laws and they eat in a way that I think is pretty typical of American diets. It horrifies me. Their freezer is always "clean" looking because every item stored there comes in a box.
Since moving here I feel like I have so much less control over my food and Jack's diet especially. Whatever grandma and grandpa eat, Jack gets a bite. Ice cream, fruit packed in sugar syrup, buttery crackers... it really does make my stomach turn. But out of my desire to be respectful and non-offensive I just watch and keep my mouth shut.
The reality is that I could still have "control" but I just don't want to fight for it.
I've started reading the ingredient lists on the granola bars I hand Jack while we're driving and there are usually a minimum of three different names for sugar.
Gah!
So, I've started reading. I've started asking questions.
And I'm totally overwhelmed by information!
Similar to when I started reading books on parenting, I feel even more confused than when I started. In one article I can read about the benefits of whole grains, then, I discover the SCD (Specific Carbohydrate Diet) which suggests eating NO grains.
I know a change is coming for my family and I am fully aware that I am going to be the one to start the change.
The question now is where and when to start.
I have this compulsion that I want to have it all "right" before I start. I want to know the end product and I want to start there. The reality, however, is that we'll have to start small and keep moving forward at a steady pace.
If I wait for perfection I'll never do anything and I'll just watch as my in-laws hand my son fatty and sugary snacks and I'll keep buying the cheaper options over the healthier options...
The change starts with me.
So here we go!
